I've wondered the same thing time and time again. I guess it's just tradition. But perhaps there is hope for the future generation. My 3 sons all have an aversion for neckties. The 14 year old just refuses to wear them. The 9 year old will wear them until he's out of sight of myself and my wife and then tear it off. The key factor is having a collar that is not too tight. I wouldn't mind a ban, but only because it would justify my occasionally tie-less appearance!
